In choosing a martial art style to practice for self defence there are a number of fighting arts that have been modified to accomodate the modalities of enthusiasts who flock to martial art schools and self defence seminars. most of these programs are configured in haste to meet the demand and as a result are not fit for real life self defence.

Below is a list of Familiar martial arts that are most suited for those that want to learn self defence. If you are interested in taking martial arts so that you can learn self defence and get your body in fighting shape these styles of martial arts will be best for you to consider.

Sport karate: Sport karat is one popular styles of karate in america. It is a blending of several different more traditional martial arts styles to make one cohesive style. Because this sport has a lot of appeal, a self defense component has been included and it has become well suited to this blend of martial arts.

Aikido: is a traditional martial art style that developed withself defence in mind. this martial art style focuses on teaching how to use an attackers enegy against him. In aikido you will learn how to redirect an attack against you rather than trying to stop it with brute force.

Aikido is a Japanese defensive martial art founded by Morehei Ueshiba. Although it’s relatively modern, it’s based on much older ju-jutsu techniques and principles from Japanese swordsmanship. The art is characterised by its blending and circular movements, which are used to pin or throw. Unlike judo, it’s not a sport so you’ll never win anything, and, unlike karate, we don’t kick or punch.

Judo: is first and foremost a system of physical and mental training designed to develop one’s mind and body to the fullest extent.

Judo is both a martial art and an Olympic sport that focuses on throwing and grappling techniques. Practice comprises both kata (pre-arranged forms) and randori (sparring). The freedom of randori allows for great flexibility of movement when applying a full range of techniques that include throwing, pins, joint locks, and chokes. There is no better martial arts for developing overall strength and balance.

Kung Fu: Kung fu training that uses chi kung to develop internal force and mental balance even in the face of danger, if trainees have the patience and time to learn and master the art of kung fu using chi kung this is most effective as a self defence practice because with mastering of mental balance even in the face of an attack, your calm will first make your attacker uneasy and will ensure that you act appropriately.

Aikijutsu

Over many centuries Aikijutsu has proven to be a very effective self defense system, used by the Samurai in ancient Japan for close combat fighting, Aikijutsu utilization of one’s opponent’s movement or intention in order to subdue them usually through join manipulation and throwing techniques makes it useful in today’s conditions.

One of the oldest sports is martial arts. Martial arts differ in style from one country to another. Many of the countries that practice a form of martial arts have added their own specialty to the sport. With the wide variety of styles to choose from, one might wonder how to decide which style if right for his or hers situation. One great tool that you can use to help make this difficult decision is the martial arts guide. Even if you are an expert in this sport, a guide can still provide you with interesting and informative information to make the best decision possible.

Since many countries have added their own twist to martial arts, a great deal of styles have been created. Learning about these differences is not always an easy task because the differences can be slight and some styles are practiced only in their home country. Other styles have been featured in books, movies, and on TV. The styles featured in the media are often more recognized by the average person. Martial arts have gained in popularity as the regular everyday person is looking for ways to protect themselves from the growing number of hazards that everyone faces.

Another reason for considering the use of a martial arts guide is that it can help you to determine which style can benefit you the best. For those who want to learn martial arts for its philosophy, and may be looking to become part of this unique community, martial art training with a sensei or teacher is recommended. Before you begin to consider a teacher (sensei), a martial arts guide can provide extra knowledge to help you make a better decision. While many different styles exist, many of the styles interact with other styles. A couple of these styles include Aikido and Jujutsu.

Police officers and other law enforcement personnel are often taught Aikido. Aikido is from Japan and the main idea or philosophy behind this style is to help an individual to redirect the opponent’s power. By redirecting the attack, the individual can take down an opponent without causing physical harm. Another well-known method is Jujutsu. Law enforcement also benefits from this martial arts style because it is meant to allow someone to disarm an opponent especially when the individual being attached is not armed. Samurais often use this form of martial arts.

Karate is known as the striking art and it uses feet, hands, and elbows to combat or incapacitate someone attacking. Karate is one of the most recognized martial arts because of TV programs that have featured the fighting style. Animated and regular TV shows have also referred to these fighting styles as Kung Fu. This term is really a generic term that does not refer to a particular style. A martial arts guide can help one to learn more about the many variations of martial art styles available.

No matter which form of martial arts you might choose from a martial arts guide, all are great to help you build strength and cardiovascular fitness.

Many people do not understand the ideals that martial arts offer. In the movie, “The Karate Kid,
” a number of scenes helps to show how much heart is part of the martial arts community. Mr. Miyagi tries to teach the young Daniel that Karate is not meant to be used for fighting but to help someone defend him or herself. Throughout the movie you can see how important being part of the martial arts community is to Daniel.

A great deal of training is part of the practice and attention to detail that a teacher or sensei can provide for anyone who wants to learn more about martial arts. The physical and mental practices that make up this sport can be difficult. By joining the martial arts community, an individual provides him or herself with a resource that can help to make the transition to an expert in the sport possible. Martial arts require a higher level of ideals than some other physical sports because of its mental aspects.

For those who join a Dojo and have the opportunity to compete locally or nationally with others in the same sport, understand that the trophy is not necessarily the object of winning. Learning from other athletes who participate in martial arts is an integral part of being successful in the sport. Many different stories have been told that reveal how the one you least suspect might be the one you should watch for.

In Aikido, the student learns that force from a competitor can be redirected. To explain how this is possible, an instructor tells the story of a young student who had trained for some time in the art of Aikido. He and his teacher were traveling by train when a young angry man boarded the train bearing a knife. While the young student began to consider his training, the teacher began talking quietly to the angry young man. He kept talking calmly to the young man and began to move forward. Eventually he took the knife from the man and directed him to a employee of the train.

The young student approached his teacher and explained that he finally understood why Aikido is known as the ‘way of the open hand.’ The teacher explained that the philosophy behind the martial art was not just something that people said but that it was an integral part. Being part of a martial arts community can help you to take a philosophy and learn to embrace it in a way you might not have considered before. High ideals can become part of your belief system, no matter what cultural background you have.

Although there are many different forms of martial arts to choose from, the martial arts community embraces all of them. Take advantage of the resources this community can provide so you can increase your ideals and allow you to get the most out of the sport. Martial arts is the guardian to this higher level of understanding that today’s generation hopes to learn.

Enjoy the traditions and the resources the Martial Arts Community can provide for those interested in the Martial Arts sport. InterMartialArts.com has a great deal of information to help you find the community you are looking for.

A great deal of people has become interested in martial arts because of the amount of press that this sport has received in many different television shows and movies. Jean Claude Van Damme is one movie star who has inspired many people to consider trying martial arts out. One of the attractions to this sport is that no matter what size you may be, or how strong you are, martial arts can help you to defeat an attacker that is bigger and stronger than you are. Martial arts teach you to be smarter than the attacker, thus providing you with the best weapon of all.

Practically every country in the world has developed its own spin on the martial arts sport. If you are considering joining a school to learn martial arts, you might want to look at a martial arts guide of the different varieties of fighting styles available. Some of these styles include Aikido, Jujutsu, Karate, Judo, Tae Kwan Do, and Kung Fu. Each style has slightly different philosophies that go with it. Aikido philosophy is known as the way of the open hand. Jujutsu is the way of yielding. The striking art is also known as Karate. Judo is the gentle way. Tae Kwan Do is the art of licking and punching.

Because of the different types of martial arts, different schools offer different schools of thought. The martial arts guide is an excellent place to begin learning about different schools that can help you to learn this sport. Schools charge different amounts of fees and tuitions. If you have an opportunity, you should visit the school to see how the philosophies are taught. You should be able to learn everything you need to know by asking questions. Each sensei should be able to answer any questions you have.

No matter how much you think you know about martial arts, a beginner’s class is often the best choice. Starting small is the best option because joining a more sophisticated class can be overwhelming and may keep you from progressing. Learn how the school teaches philosophy, etiquette and basic moves. A martial arts guide is an excellent source of knowledge about etiquette and basic moves.

Before you begin to spend money on a school, you should consider how much money you want to budget for spending. Different types of martial arts can cost different amounts to participate in. Aikido schools might require investing in a white uniform (Keiko-Gi). For anyone who hopes to learn Kendo, the costs may be much higher as this type of training requires the use of different weapons and armor. A martial arts guide can also help you by preparing you with knowledge of what you might need for a particular school of style of fighting.

Everyone can benefit from martial arts by taking a little time to learn as much about the different types of martial arts that are available. The best way to accomplish this is with a martial arts guide that explains the differences and can help you to make a more informed judgment.

One of the oldest types of sports developed on this planet is martial arts. Because this sport has been around so long, many different variations have been created. Every country and region in the world often has developed its own form of martial arts. With so many different possibilities to choose from, how does anyone ever determine which martial art sport to participate in?

To help people make a decision such as this one, martial arts guides are available to teach you about the different styles of martial arts. While there may be too many variations to all be listed in any martial arts guide, you can learn about some of the more popular or well-known variations. Most guides provide information about the fighting style, the country of its origin, and some tips or other information to help you to learn more about the style.

Even with the great number of types of martial arts, martial arts communities have been created to help meet the needs of those participating in the sport. Some communities may be centered on a certain form of the sport, while other martial arts communities encompass the entire sport. A martial arts guide can help you to learn more so you can decide which of the arts is right for you.

Some of the information you might find in a martial arts guide includes information about Aikido, Jujutsu, Karate, or Kung Fu. Aikido is one style developed in Japan that teaches people how to redirect an attack. Aikido is a favorite of law enforcement officers who want to subdue a suspect without causing physical harm. Another favorite of law personnel is the way of yielding or Jujutsu. Japanese warriors practiced this type of martial arts so they could disarm opponents when they were not armed themselves.

A martial arts guide can also provide information on Karate or the striking art. This type requires the fighter to use their elbows, hands, and feet to take down an attacker. Most people are more familiar with Karate because many Hollywood movies showcase this style. Kung Fu is well known to many people because of the television show of the same name. This show introduced the philosophy behind Kung Fu to millions of people. The idea that martial arts do not only have a physical but a mental aspect first became known to a great deal of people because of this TV show.

With all the different types of martial arts to choose from, a martial arts guide is an important way to learn about the different styles and to understand how each can be learned by an interested person. Even with the information provided, you cannot always learn what you need to know. For this reason, a martial arts community may be able to provide the extra information to make an informed decision. The only way to make a choice is to begin to limit the number of choices. Eliminate the extra choices and you will be closer to being able to make a decision.

One of the most shocking things in the martial arts is how instructors don’t do advanced training. By this I mean, after a certain amount of training, they never get any more instruction for themselves. The idea here is that they know everything, and all they have to do now is polish it, perfect it, and time will be their teacher.

The idea, of course, is ridiculous. Yes, time will improve a person, but what will improve a person faster is getting more data. Imagine a computer which never inputs any further data and you will understand what I mean.

So you need sources of fresh info if you are going to become improved, and you need to make mental connections with other arts. For instance, if you’ve got a black belt in Kenpo, a course in Aikido is going to open your mind up. At the end of every Kenpo technique, once you understand what Aikido really is, you can create additional techniques.

And, if you’ve got some good hard Kung Fu, the next step is exploring the internal schools of Kung fu. Aside from improving your understanding of the martial arts, you now have more to offer students and prospective students. This is going to result in better quality of instruction, and it’s going to be a lot of fun besides.

Now, let’s say you don’t have access to an aikido school, or an Internal Arts school, what is the solution? Well, you read the periodicals and scour the net, and this goes a long way. But the real key to improvement is in DVD lessons.

You can pick up a DVD on an entire art, sometimes for as little as ten bucks a DVD, and you can sit in the comfort of your armchair and get up and practice to your hearts content. I used to buy so many DVDs at my martial arts supply store the owner gave me an automatic, good customer, ten per cent discount. And I would spend my late evenings and weekends learning new arts until I had them totally cold.

When I walked into my kung fu school on a Monday morning, I always had a kettle full of great ideas. Students were always wondering how I cam up with so many great ideas, and they were always blown out by the twists and interpretations I could give the same old same old forms and techniques. I tell ya, when people were bowing to me, they were bowing to superior knowledge by disk, and that can happen to any instructor!

Now, when you pick out a Martial Arts DVD course, make sure it deals with an entire art, and not just an overview, an overview is nothing more than icing, it’s not the cake, there is rarely any meat to this kind of DVD. And, make sure you pick up a new art/course every month, you need to make a project out of this, and not a whim. Martial Arts DVDs are one of the best investments that I know of, I tell you, if you are an instructor, it is imperative that you keep improving yourself, and DVDs are a blast to do.

I had been studying the martial arts for over twenty years when this happened. I had studied Chinese Kenpo and Kwon Bop Korean Karate, Wing Chun and Aikido, and lots of other things. I was working in a door factory, and some of the fellows knew that I was a martial arts fanatic.

One lunchtime, one of my coworkers asked me to teach him something about the martial arts. We went into a room located at the rear of the factory. It was hard to see in the room, and quite noisy, and we had to really concentrate to hear each other speak. I was showing him suburito, which are basic Aikido sword exercises.

I was showing him how to stand a certain way and hold the sword straight up in a ready position. Suddenly, I felt a huge force grab a hold of me; it was like the hand of a 100 foot tall giant.

I couldn’t stop the sword, and it curved downward viciously. A guy named Eddie had been sneaking up behind me, and the sword cut through his chest. It was a ragged cut, blood all over the place, and he staggered back against a stack of pallets and grabbed at his chest.

It was time for first aid, and Eddie was going to have to go to the hospital and get his chest sewn back together. While we were standing there, trying to stop the blood, I asked Eddie, “What were you doing?” He looked up at me and said, “I was going to get you, man.

I was going to grab you. It was just a joke, I thought it would be funny.” Sensing something under his words, I asked him, “What were you thinking, right when it happened?”

He frowned, “I thought I was going to get you. Right when I was starting to leap on you I thought, ‘Aha…got him!’ And then your sword cut me open!”

The skin is a fence, and the eyes and ears are like searchlights watching what goes on beyond the fence. With the martial arts you start moving energy around inside the body, and you start to become more aware. Eventually you start to become aware outside the fence. You perceive without the eyes and ears.

And, you learn that you are more than just a body, you are a spiritual being more than 100 feet tall. What I am saying here is that whether you study tae kwon do or Aikido, Gung Fu like Wing Chun, or something else, the answers are there, the martial arts can help you find the real you. You just need to dedicate yourself to working out, and in an art that is logical and efficient.

This really happened, and the method Al used is called <a rel=”nofollow” onclick=”javascript:_gaq.push(['_trackPageview', '/outgoing/article_exit_link']);” href=”http://www.monstermartialarts.com”>Matrix Martial Arts</a>.
“We can change our circumstances by a mere change of our attitude.” – William James, 19th Century American psychologist and philosopher

I’ve noticed I often take myself, my work, and my life way too seriously. I blow events out of proportion, demand perfection, and generally behave as if my needs are at the center of everything.

I agonize over small decisions, worry about personal interactions, wrestle with each word of a simple e-mail, and wake up at night with my heart pounding in anticipation of tomorrow’s presentation or with angst about what happened today. Was I good enough? How can I get this right for a change? Why did I say THAT?! The minutest detail is not too small to escape scrutiny when I’m in this frame of mind – when life becomes very, very serious.
When this happens I lose my self, my center, and my perspective. I step out of the precious present moment and into anxiety about the future or the past. I forget that there’s nothing I can control except right now, right here, this moment and my availability to it.

Happily, remembering this personal truth is what shifts me back into the present. I begin to breathe again and slip seamlessly into the realization that right now, at this moment, I am okay. Sanity returns as I focus on what is at hand.

Vibrant and Joyful
I practice a martial art called aikido, whose flowing and graceful movements belie the power behind them. Aikido is based on principles such as centered response and utilization of energy, and it has practical applications in the world of conflict resolution and self-management. Morihei Ueshiba, the founder of aikido, called it the Art of Peace, and said that we must “always practice the Art of Peace in a vibrant and joyful manner.” Aikidoists try to remember this as we throw each other around the mat, smiling and having fun while we work to perfect our technique.

As we push on into the first decade of this new century, it is likely that life will become even more complex than it already is. Here are some suggestions that might help when you become separated from your perspective:

- Acknowledge – Often all it takes to change your current stressed out state is to notice it. As you bring your awareness back to the present moment, you regain a sense of perspective and possibility.
- Center – Breathe. Smile. Be.
-Call someone and talk about it, better yet laugh about it.
- Read a poem.
- Listen to music.
- Take a walk or go for a run.
- Dream up some practices of your own.

Use your growing awareness to lighten up, smile, live and love in a vibrant and joyful manner. And stop taking yourself so seriously!

When choosing the best self defense style to learn, all you really need to know is a little background information. Once you’ve found your interest, the trainer will lead you through the entire process. Self defense training is also sometimes referred to as combat self defense training and martial arts, depending on the type of instruction and specialty training you receive. Self-defense methods were originally used to train soldiers and other personnel charged with military fighting. However, today they have become more commonly used for street self defense, sport, fitness, and a means to improve self-confidence – especially for youth and teens. There are a number of disciplines to learn from, and each one has a set of defining characteristics that make it unique from the rest.

Once you have chosen your favorite form to learn, you should take instruction from a qualified teacher. Through persistent training your skills and abilities will continue to increase. The history of the martial arts date back to ancient China, where they were practiced entirely as a means of defense against an aggressor in times of war.

Some disciplines incorporate unarmed techniques, some armed techniques, and still others employ both techniques in training people in combat self defense. In all disciplines, the goal is to bring the opponent to a point of submission or to render him unable to finish his attack. Some use weapons, other emphasize joint locks, still others the swift and adept maneuvering of swords, knives, daggers and other specialized equipment. In sparring situations where the goal is to practice rather than defend, specialized wooden weapons are used by both opponents to prevent serious injury.

The oldest types of self defense known are the martial arts which emphasize striking. Usually unarmed, fighters work to strike their opponents at the body’s weakest and most vulnerable points. Tae Kwon Do, Karate, and kickboxing are all disciplines that focus heavily on striking maneuvers. In sporting events rules usually dictate that fighters make strikes to the upper torso.

Joint lock arts are especially challenging. In these martial arts disciplines, practitioners must master the art of pushing and manipulating joints until their opponents experience extreme discomfort and are forced to give up the fight and submit. For smaller contestants, this method is particularly useful, as the techniques can be performed on opponent now matter how great the size disadvantage. One of the most popular disciplines that utilizes joint locking moves is Aikido. Aikido is very challenging to learn and can require years and years of dedicated training to master.

A more defined method of self defense is the joint lock arts. A person must learn how to push and manipulate an opponent’s joints past their comfort level. This is a very effective method to use when a small person defends themselves against a much larger person. Aikido is a type of joint lock arts technique. These type of techniques require years of study and are very difficult to master.

Here are some martial arts tips for when you’re deciding on what style of martial arts you’re wanting to get into. Martial arts isn’t just something you can learn in a weekend seminar. It requires months and years of dedicated practice to get truly good at it, so you have to choose wisely.

The first question to ask is, “What’s your goal?” Are you taking up martial arts practice for self defense? Are you doing it for stress relief and meditation? Do you want to do it just because it’s cool? These are the questions you need to ask before signing up for lessons.

Different styles will lead to different results. Martial arts can be broken up into categories. These are internal vs. external, and soft vs. hard. Some styles will combine some of these categories to greater and lesser degrees.

Internal is the more meditative element of martial arts. You can find it in Kung Fu, Tai Chi and Aikido, just to name a few styles. External is sheerly for combat or tournament purposes. It focuses on strikes and throws and is exemplified in Karate, Judo, Tae Kwon Do and Jiujitsu. Soft styles focus on grappling techniques and can be found in some forms of Kung Fu, Tai Chi, Jiujitsu, Aikido and Judo. Hard styles are about power and striking. This is where Karate, Boxing, and Tae Kwon Do fall in.

With these elements in mind, it should be much easier for you to choose the right martial arts style.
